Mentoring & role shadowing

Mentoring is a process in which the mentor serves as a role model, trusted counsellor, or teacher who provides opportunities for development, growth, and support to less experienced individuals. This relationship gives people the opportunity to share their professional skills and experiences and to grow and develop in the process.

Mentoring is a key tool in the WMAD programme of personal development and empowerment of women. Pairing aspiring candidates with more experienced mentors provides constructive and informed advice and support, giving women the confidence to take control of their own journey and empowering them to plan their own future, capitalising on their potential.

We have an on-going recruitment process to ensure a minimum of 30 mentors are in place every year. We look for candidates with good listening skills, who are able to challenge and motivate others and enjoy sharing knowledge to help others progress. WMAD believe that individuals achieve better levels of success with the guidance and support of others.

What mentors gain from the process...

It is not only the mentee who benefits from this programme. Mentoring offers the chance to share knowledge and experience, broaden your horizons, practice and develop your own management skills, widen your professional network and gain satisfaction from encouraging, supporting and guiding other women to achieve their own potential.

How 'mentees' are supported...

The mentees receive support from WMAD in the form of individual action plans and interviews, matching them to a suitable mentor if they are unable to suggest potential candidates themselves, as well as receiving on-going support to achieve their goals.

Role Shadowing

An intrinsic part of our training is to broker relationships between participants and local role models. These range from community leaders to Councillors, Assembly Members, and entrepreneurs. We believe that women require opportunities to interact with the decision-makers, gatekeepers, and sector leaders on a level playing field and our goal is to provide these opportunities in all of our training programmes.

Role shadowing is fundamental to our Women in Management course and each participant is encouraged to spend time with a figure in public life (either male or female and locally or nationally) that they would like to emulate. Working with and observing post-holders in action gives an honest insight into what those appointments and roles truly involve and is vital to the participants learning journey.
